Sheila, there are no comments attached to this photo, so I assume you are referring to the comments from this post where I had the “caption contest.” I love this photo too. That trip was magical. I will never forget being down in my parents’ bedroom on a drizzly, dreary late winter afternoon, chatting with Mama, who had a horrible cold. Daddy was sitting at the desk in the corner, paying bills or bidding his trips or whatever. Mama said “I’m sick of this weather. Let’s get out of here.” Daddy looked up and said “I have the next four days off. We can leave tomorrow if you want.” And just like that, we were headed to sunnier shores. Of course I must have called my best friend Beth immediately — she, like me, was an airline brat with Space-A passes at her disposal. Next thing we knew, we had skipped out of school for the rest of the week, and were in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where I saw the Caribbean for the first time ever and fell head over heels in love with the entire island vibe. I have been back to the Caribbean more times than I can accurately count, and visited a dozen or so islands, and lived three years in Hawaii– but nothing will ever surpass that enchanting little dream of a trip. There Daddy is, looking totally unfazed, just another day in paradise. I still miss Mama and Daddy so much.
Julia, Iām rambling around on Defeat Despair, and came across this treasure. These stories from the comments are priceless. I love this photo! š
