For better or worse, this young man has become something of a folk hero, under the hashtags #SkyKing and #WeAreSkyKing. While I can sympathize with people’s desire to romanticize it, it is a suicide; a tragedy. And tragedy is never something to celebrate. My heart goes out to his family. See three sample tweets here and here and here.
Is this like a Thelma and Louise thing? I hope not. At the time of his final flight there was an outdoor concert at Safeco field- a huge outdoor facility not unlike Turner field- with Pearl Jam.A packed house of 65,000 people. He could have easily flown there. Five minutes from Seatac. How much better a story if he had landed and took some flying lessons via his Go Fund me account. Agree: “let’s not celebrate the tragedies so much.”
Hey fun movie on Netflix ” Guernesy reading club and potato peel pie society.” About a writer and a reading club per and post WW2.
Mike, I don’t think it’s a Thelma and Louise thing. Driving off a cliff takes way less talent than executing a barrel roll, and Thelma and Louise was not a real story, nor even based on one. Plus the young man who ended his own life in that plane was not a criminal fleeing from the law. Apparently his “only” crime was stealing that plane and taking off in it. However, it is a bit worrisome, and even more sad, that so many people seem to identify deeply with his desperation.
I read the Guernesy Potato Peel Society book and remember enjoying it, but I did not know it was a movie. I will try to check it out.
It also seems that especially for the younger folks there are some who idealisie, romanticise suicide in song, and in film –. There is a Netflix series “13 Reasons why” (sp? ) which may also not be that hellpful about ayoung person that took their own life. I watched the first couple of episodes and then stopped. I am not sure what the message was. Also the suicides of the rich and famous- singer Chris Cornell, Robyn Williams and others -seems to also have a message. Satan’s minions at work- I don’t know.

So you think they will make a film out of this young man’s life? Tom Russel..
How many times this young man must have looked up and thought “There you’ll be!” 😢
Sheila, I hope he is in heaven meeting Captain Eddie and Lucky Lindy and my Daddy and Tuffy and countless other pilots who understand. ❤
Thanks for sharing this. Proably would not have seen it as I don’t twitter.

Mike, I don’t know. I hope not. I would hate for anyone to try to make money off the suffering of someone else.
I actually never watched Thelma and Louis either.
In my opinion, you didn’t miss much. If I could go back and “un-watch” it, I would.
