Color forever

In wintertime, I find it especially helpful to surround myself with color to brighten my mood. Adding color to life is easy and need not be expensive. Color-rich items such as dishes, throw pillows and magazines can be purchased for very little, but also we can add color to our lives without spending a penny. Take “field trips” online and in real time: visit photographic websites and blogs, or browse through grocery-store floral departments and specialty stores with attractive displays of items from all over the world. Let your eyes feast on color to your heart’s content. If we think of color as a sort of visual vitamin, making sure that we get our minimum daily requirement of beauty, we help to ensure ourselves against the winter blahs that can easily overtake us at this time of year.

Yes, visual vitamins indeed! LOL. I’m big believer in surrounding your space with these vivid reminders that breathes fresh life in each moment of life. It’s a pleasure to enjoy the warm, yellow rays of a sunrise, the dazzling white-hot sparkles of fireworks of a New Years celebration, the deepest shade of blue in the eyes of a friend, and a kaleidoscopic of colorful inspirations from reading a friend’s blog. Yes, these truly add color and meaning to life! It’s a true wonder and a celebration of the visual and spiritual senses for all seasons! “The Artist’s Way” is a book by Julia Cameron and it contains great advice, much like yours:-) In fact Julia C. has a name for “field trips” and calls them an “artist’s date” and recommends we schedule them weekly. Wonderful counsel, especially for those of us who live under the drab dome of post-New Year’s clouds of rain/snow/sleet, etc. Thanks for this reminder to be proactive with visual vitamins!
Hi Kathy, thanks for visiting us here, and for your comment. I have a copy of The Artist’s Way, which I read years ago and have skimmed through many times since. That book helped me realize that time spent on creative activity is never wasted, even if we do not achieve stellar results!

Thank you, Mary Ann! Drew once commented that he thought I missed really seeing things because I was always looking through the camera. I tried to explain to him that I felt I saw things actually BETTER through the lens of a camera. More on this in a later post (January 16).
Having a sale on winter plants this weekend at Furney’s nursery- Des Moines Wash.- including winter Camelias and witch Hazels. I would like to buy a camelia, but my wife has banned me from buying more plants as we have no space. I think they have some nice picts onn their website of winter interest plants. http://www.furneys.com. BTW the Mandevilla still has blooms and it was 31 degrees last evening. Should probably put it in the garage.
Hi Mike, it’s nice to hear from you again. I tried the link to Furney’s but it didn’t work for me; it took me to another site. My husband and I hope to plant more camelias around our home. We have 5 or 6 in the back corner of our yard (pictured on the blog, but covered in snow) and they have grown amazingly large in 8 years. It’s nice to have the blooms in cool weather when all the azaleas have long ago faded away. Also I love the shiny green foliage in winter. I will have to try a Mandevilla and see how it does. I have no idea what a witch hazel plant looks like, I’ll have to look that one up.
