Bounty enough

Keukenhof Gardens, The Netherlands, March 2007

“We do not want merely to see beauty, though, God knows, even that is bounty
enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words — to be united
with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe
in it, to become part of it.”  — C. S. Lewis

In many ways, the cut flowers in your kitchen were just as beautiful.

Thanks Eric! God’s creativity is versatile not only in depth and scope, but in usefulness. The same blooms can look equally gorgeous in a huge garden or in a small vase on a humble kitchen countertop. There’s a reason why flowers have long been a favorite way to communicate sentiment. Nothing quite like them.

I found this in my reader today and felt it was a great way to restart. The quote reminded me I am part of the world and not separate. The picture draws me with its beauty and what I am united with; the world.

After I re-blogged, a follower from Holland commented on how proud they were of the Keukenhof Gardens.

I would be proud too – I have never seen anyplace like it on earth. I hope to go back someday, but meanwhile I will probably have a lot of photos from there showing up on my blog. In fact, I have an extreme close-up of a flower I took there scheduled for this Saturday, and I have a photo of one of the gardeners that was in the post titled “Doing something worthwhile” on December 8: https://defeatdespair.wordpress.com/2012/12/08/doing-something-worthwhile/
Thanks for sharing the post. I am so happy that someone from Holland was able to see it!

Thank you, Wendell. My prayer is that we will help others find solace in our words, as we have found in the words of others. I wish you a happy and blessed 2013!

Absolutely beautiful. I’d not read that Lewis quote.

Lewis is my favorite author, but I didn’t remember ever seeing that quote before finding it for the blog. Lewis was prolific and wrote on such a wide variety of topics, but much of it is not as widely known. He left volumes of letters, essays etc. and one of my favorite of his works is one hardly anyone I know has read: An Experiment in Criticism, which is about literature. It’s easy to forget that Lewis was a professor of literature, not a theologian.
