The true traveler

“The true traveler is he who goes on foot, and even then, he sits down a lot of the time.” Colette

Of all the reasons I love walking, travel may be the most lasting.  I have done a good bit of traveling since I was a girl, and as far back as I can remember, the most remarkable things I saw were seen on foot and not through the window of a tour bus.  I am fascinated by the accounts of those who traverse a country or even a continent on foot.  I think it would be wonderful to have that much time to simply take in new surroundings every day.

Of course, as Colette points out, part of the secret lies in taking the time.  Very few of us will be able to spend a month or even a week traveling on foot, but I encourage you to experiment with walking at times you might normally drive or ride.  You’ll see things in a whole new way, and you might even find interesting discoveries that await, now unknown to you, just outside your front door, down your street or in your home town.

Isn’t it wonderful to find something that is so good for us, and also so pleasant or even fun? Thanks for visiting and for your comment!

I agree. That is something I love doing. To know a place better you have to be very close to it so that you can feel it through all your senses and that leaves behind long lasting impressions. I love walking through the remotest parts of the places and we get a totally different perspective. Btw my latest post is about walking.

Bindu, thanks for letting me know about your post – today is quite stressful, but I just flew over to your blog and took a virtual walk with you – I really needed the “instant serenity” – Thank you!

Hi Merry, thanks for being here and for your comment. It is so much more interesting to see everything up close, isn’t it? Today is rough but we will keep praying for things to get better!

Julia, I only know things are not going well, so just taking a moment here at our office to say a prayer, asking The Lord to be with Jeff and with you today. Until later, Sheila

My nephew is in China right now and just posted a picture of the Great Wall. It’s heady stuff to think how many feet have walked were he’s walked before. Did you ever see the documentary ‘A Long Way Down’? It’s Ewan McGregor and his friend Charlie traveling from Scotland to South Africa on Motorcycles. Great scenery and stories of the challenges, joys, dangers and interesting souls they meet on the way. I loved it so much I bought it for my brother and he loved it too.

I haven’t seen that, but would probably enjoy it. I very much hope someday to see the Great Wall of China. What a fascinating country – it’s near the top of my list of “places I’ve never been but hope to go to.” I even took a semester of Chinese to get ready. 🙂 Ni hao!

Well hello! aren’t you are a surprise a minute! I’d have to study for years let alone a semester. “Qù túshū guǎn de lùshàng?”

bu dong!? (Remember I only took one semester!) 🙂
